Onyx stone was one of the first gems mentioned in the Bible. As God directed, the Hebrews used Onyx to make the shoulder stones on the ephod (a type of apron) to which Aaron's breastpeice would be fastened. Aaron was Israel’s first High Priest. Upon these stones were written the names of the children of Israel. (Exodus 28:9-13) Aaron was to bear the names on his shoulders as a memorial before the Lord.
